The Living Environment Trust

The Living Environment Trust

Environmental Project Management and Consultation

The Living Environment Trust is an environmental charity based in Coventry, which aims to promote environmental and sustainability awareness within local communities.

Accordingly, the Trust uses the restoration of neglected inner-city green spaces as a way to engage a range of community groups, whilst also serving to enhance and expand the existing biodiversity and develop important community and educational resources.

The Trust delivers a range of informal and semi-informal environmental programmes including educational packages in schools and children’s ‘green parties’ as a means of promoting a greater awareness and understanding from an early age. Many of the educational sessions are delivered ‘in the field’ alongside work that is being undertaken by the Trust in areas of environmental management, so that the educational experiences are drawn from practical engagement.

In addition, the Trust is heavily involved in the maintenance and restoration of the 5 ½ mile stretch of the Coventry Canal: an invaluable educational resource, as well as a crucial habitat for wildlife, within an urban context.

As well as operating a clean-up boat, on a weekly basis, the Trust is also involved in habitat improvement works for key species along the canal. Besides, a 25m long narrowboat - the ‘Coventrian’ - was donated to the Trust in 2008 and presents a unique opportunity for children and community groups to understand the environmental aspects and heritage that is specific to the canal networks. The Coventrian is also available for private hire to cater for a range of social and corporate functions and children’s parties themed around the ‘Pirates of the Coventrian.’

The Living Environment Trust's Four Main Areas of Service Delivery

Environmental Management

The Trust provides a wide range of professional services associated with environmental management, including green space planning and the restoration of neglected open spaces, protected species surveying and the implementation of Environmental Management Systems within businesses to meet the accreditation criteria for ISI 14001.

Educational Projects

The Trust delivers a range of informal and semi-informal environmental programmes including educational packages in schools, holiday activities and children’s ‘green parties’ as a means of promoting a greater awareness and understanding of environmental issues from an early age. Many of the educational sessions are delivered ‘in the field’ whilst the Trust is working in areas of environmental management, so that the educational experiences are drawn from practical engagement.

Community Projects

The Trust places a significant emphasis on the value of community partnershjips and engaging local people both consultatively and practically in the delivery of community based environmental projects. This approach ensures that communities develop a sense of ownership that will prevent such improvements from being vandalized or neglected in the future.

The Coventrian Narrow Boat

The Coventrian Narrowboat was donated to the Trust in 2008 and presents a unique opportunity to engage community groups and children with an important source of environmental and heritage interest such as is contained within the canal networks. The Coventrian is also available for private hire to cater for a range of social and corporate functions.
